The Rite Journey at Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School: Nurturing the Transition to Adulthood.

The Rite Journey

At Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, we believe in supporting our students as they grow into responsible, resilient, and compassionate young adults. That is why we have embraced The Rite Journey, a transformative year-long program designed for our Year 9 students. This initiative is more than just a curriculum; it is a rite of passage that guides them from the world of childhood to the opportunities of adulthood.

While our dedicated teachers are fully invested in this journey, the true magic of The Rite Journey unfolds when we work together. We have seen that students gain the most from this experience when there is a strong partnership between the student, the teacher, and you, the parents. Your support and active engagement in this process are invaluable.

The Journey Begins

The Rite Journey officially begins with our Calling and Departure Ceremonies, a powerful two-day experience for our students.

  • The Calling Ceremony: On the first day, students walk from Kingscliff Beach to Fingal Beach. This walk provides a space for them to reflect on their childhood, appreciate their past, and consciously begin their journey toward adulthood.
  • The Departure Ceremony: At dawn the next morning, students gather on the top oval of the Mahers Lane Campus. This ceremony marks a significant step on the Hero’s Journey, as students publicly commit to “what lies ahead.” Your presence at this milestone is crucial and deeply valued. By attending, you provide your child with public affirmation and recognition as they embark on this meaningful path.

Challenges and Self-Reflection

The program is built on the premise that embracing challenges and developing self-awareness are essential for personal growth. Throughout the year, students will complete a Challenge with the guidance of a mentor, as well as a Challenge Passport, pushing themselves outside their comfort zones to build resilience and character.

One of the program’s most profound challenges is The Abyss Solo, a solo camping experience. In a world of constant digital noise and stimulation, this 24-hour period of solitude offers a unique opportunity for students to practice contemplation and mindfulness. During this time, they are alone with their thoughts, giving them space to reflect and simply “be.”

The Rite Journey and The Lindisfarne Way

All the lessons, activities, and challenges within The Rite Journey are designed to empower students with the characteristics that align with The Lindisfarne Way. Through the core values of Compassion, Wisdom, and Respect, and a culture of leadership, standards, and collaboration, we encourage students to become the best versions of themselves – courageous, servant-hearted, and confident young adults.

The journey culminates in the Homecoming Graduation, a significant rite of passage for our students. This night of gratitude and celebration is a special moment for your child to reflect on their growth, consolidate their experiences, and treasure the relationships they’ve built along the way.

While completing The Rite Journey program does not automatically make a student an adult, it provides them with the tools and mindset to begin their journey into adulthood with purpose. It is our privilege and our passion to guide your child on this important path, and we are committed to ensuring their experience is both enriching and memorable.
